The occasion marked the 100th Remembrance of the late Chief Imam, Ibrahim Ankuri, and the 170th Anniversary of the Turbaning of the late Chief Imam Nafiu Gana.
Imam Ibrahim Ankuri, born in 1825 in Iga Iduganran, emerged as an esteemed Islamic figure with a lineage tied to Chief Imam Nofiu Gana of Isale Eko. His journey into Islamic teachings sparked an unwavering passion for the faith, cultivating a profound understanding of Islam.

In 1891, due to his devoted efforts in promoting the Islamic faith within the Isale Eko community and beyond, Imam Ibrahim was appointed as the Chief Imam of the Lagos Central Mosque. His influence extended to pioneering Western education among Muslim children. Under his guidance, the Government Muslim School, the first Muslim school, was officially inaugurated in 1896, followed by the founding of Islamiyah Grammar School on Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, while addressing the gathering, lauded the Muslim community's pivotal role in shaping the socio-religious values in the state. He emphasized their historical influence on Lagos, dating back to the introduction of Islam to Yoruba land.
The Governor recognized the House of Chief Imam of Lagos for its enduring commitment to promoting peace and tolerance, which has elevated the Lagos Central Mosque (Moshalashi Jimoh) as a crucial faith institution, fostering stability in the state. He commended the community for using both Islamic and conventional teachings to enhance the moral fabric of the state.
